Zheng Mengni quietly pushed open the dark bedroom of Ye Bingran and turned on a dim bedside lamp, staying by the bed under the pretense of taking care of him. She intended to put on a show and leave once Sun Yao returned to the room to rest. However, the past few days at school had been exhausting, and she dozed off in a daze.
Ye Bingran turned his head slightly, his expression complicated. He wasn’t tired anymore, but with no other activities to occupy his time, he found it hard to sleep with someone lying beside him. He thought about giving the room to Zheng Mengni, but after jumping out of the window during the explosion and breaking his leg, he had no idea how long it would take to recover. With his leg in a cast, he was unable to move anywhere except for this bed.
His mood grew heavier; being awake yet feeling like a helpless invalid was more unbearable than being half-conscious in a hospital bed. Using the faint light, he glanced aside. The crutches that should have been within reach were thrown to the doorway at some point, now feeling worlds away.
Though he usually wouldn’t presume the worst about others, he couldn’t help but stare at Zheng Mengni’s fluffy head. The longer he stared, the more amused yet irritated he became.
In her groggy state, Zheng Mengni felt someone tugging at her forcefully, lifting her body into the air. It was at that moment she woke up in fright, her eyes slowly opening in the darkness to see Ye Bingran awkwardly lifting her onto the bed. She fell into the soft bedding and didn’t dare to move, nervously keeping her eyes shut as she tried to figure out what Ye Bingran was up to. He had just been discharged from the hospital and was still in a wheelchair. Wasn’t he supposed to be resting?
How could someone like him not sit still for even a second?
Zheng Mengni prepared to roll over and teach this mischievous little sister a lesson, but before she could even start, she heard a dull thud behind her. She shivered slightly.
Ye Bingran fell off the bed by herself.
Heavens.
Such a large bed.
She hadn’t even touched him.
She just rolled off like a fool.
Was she trying to frame him, trying to pull a trick?
Zheng Mengni firmly refused to allow such a thing to happen. She pretended to wake up, pouting as she crawled forward, moving to the other side of the bed.
Peeking her head out, she stared intently at Ye Bingran, who was resting quietly under the bed.
In the dim light, his face looked increasingly pale and haggard, his eyelids closed, and he appeared unexpectedly calm and obedient.
Zheng Mengni reached out to grab him.
Just as her small hand reached halfway, it was reflexively caught by Ye Bingran. He opened his eyes warily, silently fixing his gaze on her, as if asking what she was up to.
Zheng Mengni slightly parted her lips; she wanted to ask him what he was doing too.
With a bed available, why did he deliberately carry her up and sleep underneath?
It was obvious he wanted their mother to see and think she was mistreating her sister!
How outrageous! Despicable!
Zheng Mengni would never allow Ye Bingran’s scheme to succeed in framing her.
She jumped off the bed and squatted beside him, not noticing that her nightgown had covered his face.
Ye Bingran wanted to say, “Do you even understand the difference between boys and girls? Has your sense of boundaries been eaten away?”
But the words were stuck in his throat; he swallowed them back with a dark expression, feeling frustrated but unable to voice it.
Zheng Mengni pulled her skirt back down and tucked it under her, then reached out with her slender white arms to lift Ye Bingran horizontally, wearing a warm smile like spring on her lips.
“Be good, little sister; it’s cold on the floor. Let’s go sleep on the bed, okay?”
Ye Bingran hadn’t spoken for so long that his voice came out hoarse: “Let go.”
Zheng Mengni, confused, replied with a hesitant “Let… let go? Then… okay.”
Before she could finish her sentence, she immediately released him, and with a thud, Ye Bingran fell back onto the bed again.
The bed was soft; he didn’t hit the ground hard enough to hurt himself, but being dropped like that caught him completely off guard, making his head spin and his face alternate between shades of green and white.
He couldn’t be bothered to argue with a childish little brat; pulling the blanket over his head, he adopted a high-and-mighty demeanor that clearly said he refused to engage further.
Unexpectedly, the next moment, a soft and fragrant body burrowed into the blanket. Ye Bingran was embraced tightly by Zheng Mengni.
It was slippery, cool, and incredibly soft. A rush of sensations flooded Ye Bingran's mind, causing it to momentarily short-circuit. He heard Zheng Mengni's delicate voice teasingly say, "You’re not very honest when you sleep. Anyone watching would fall over! Tonight, Sister will keep you company, so be good."
Zheng Mengni's pajamas were scanty, and he stiffened, feeling a chill run down his spine. Without thinking, Ye Bingran instinctively reached out to push her away. It was too dark to see what he was touching—soft and warm.
His heart raced, and his entire hand tingled from his fingertips to his shoulder. Zheng Mengni frowned in annoyance. "Where are you touching?"
But then again, she thought, he must be jealous of her and want to squash her! What a troublesome guy!
Ye Bingran had been lying in the hospital bed for several months, feeling weak and emaciated; holding onto someone felt uncomfortable. Zheng Mengni smiled smugly and pulled him even closer.
"Just touch more if you want, silly. Go ahead and envy me slowly," she teased.
Ye Bingran felt himself heating up and kept trying to push her away. But Zheng Mengni clung to him like an octopus, wrapping herself around him again in no time. He felt like he could hardly breathe.
She needed to ensure that when their mother opened the door in the morning, she would see this harmonious scene of them being close. Ye Bingran had no choice but to comply; he couldn't ruin her plans!
In the end, he compromised and lay in Zheng Mengni's arms. In the darkness, he opened his eyes; his expression wasn't bad but certainly not good either.
Later that night, feeling hot, Zheng Mengni rolled away from him. Ye Bingran instinctively reached out to pull her back to prevent her from falling off the bed.
But he was clearly overthinking it; with such a large bed, there was no way she could fall unless she did it intentionally like he had just done.
Ye Bingran sighed in relief and turned over onto his side. He couldn't sleep and wanted to play on his phone but remembered after a while that he had left it at the club.
He hadn't contacted Ye Siqian for months. That fool! He had asked him to keep an eye on Zheng Mengni but couldn’t even manage that properly.
