At that moment, Wei Jingxi was feeling quite wronged as he complained to Zheng Mengni about how his stepmother was breaking the rules and trying to ruin his reputation. Zheng Mengni rested her chin on her hand, listening intently, occasionally asking, "Have you been putting in effort lately?"
Wei Jingxi recounted everything he had done without leaving anything out, wagging his tail in hopes of receiving praise. He softly said, "I’ve been working hard. I want to be worthy of you."
Zheng Mengni smiled gently, "That’s good."
Wei Jingxi was taken aback and exclaimed, "Did you just praise me, Xiao Ni?"
She chuckled lightly, "Is saying the truth considered praise?"
"You just praised me again!"
"What?"
"I don’t care; you’ve praised me twice today."
Zheng Mengni seemed intrigued and asked, "Since I’ve praised you, shouldn’t you show a bit more effort?"
Wei Jingxi felt a tightness in his throat and immediately replied without thinking, "I will. I definitely will."
Zheng Mengni gently parted her lips, her tone soft and tender, "Good. Should we end our call for today?"
Wei Jingxi instinctively glanced at the time; they had only been talking for ten minutes. He remembered their agreement to video chat for at least half an hour each day. Back then, he always thought that was too short, but now he felt grateful for any time they could share and didn’t dare to ask for more.
After a moment of hesitation, Wei Jingxi quietly asked, "Xiao Ni, do you have something to do right now?"
"Yes," she replied.
"Oh," he said. "Then I won’t disturb you any longer. Remember to get some rest after you finish your work."
"Okay."
After hanging up the phone, Zheng Mengni noticed a message from an unfamiliar sender.
Sender: Xia Shu.
It had been months; she almost forgot about her.
Zheng Mengni browsed through all the information with an expressionless face, while Xia Shu elaborately recounted Ye Bing's long-standing scheme to drive her out of the Zheng Family.
It seemed she was already aware of this matter, perhaps having overheard the conversation between the two siblings at the restaurant. So, was Xia Shu here to sow discord among them?
Zheng Mengni feigned anger and replied, "Is everything you said true? I can't believe that despite how I've treated Ye Bing, he harbors such malicious intentions. This is simply outrageous. Thank you, Xia Shu, for telling me all this and helping me see what kind of person he really is."
Xia Shu quickly responded, "You're welcome. So what are your plans now?"
Zheng Mengni smiled as she typed, "Why don't you help me brainstorm? I really don't know what to do; you should understand him better than I do."
After a long silence, Xia Shu seemed to have made up her mind and sent a lengthy message to Zheng Mengni. "If you ask me, someone as ungrateful and malicious as Ye Bing doesn't deserve any consideration from you. He wanted to drive you out first; you're just protecting yourself and haven't done anything wrong."
Xia Shu rambled on without getting to the point.
Zheng Mengni continued to inquire, "So what should I do?"
Xia Shu firmly replied, "You should kick him out. Having him around will only bring you harm."
After thinking for a moment, Zheng Mengni politely and gently responded, "Thank you for your advice; I will consider it."
Once she sent the message, Zheng Mengni placed her phone on the table, lowered her eyelashes, and her expression became difficult to read.
