Zheng Mengni focused on doing what she needed to do, leaving the rest to fate. Life gradually returned to the right track.
Halfway through the semester, she entered a midterm exam. Zheng Mengni didn’t let anything distract her; all her thoughts were on this test. It was time to evaluate how much she had learned over the past months.
On the day the results were announced, Zheng Mengni was called into her advisor's office. After a few routine questions about her recent situation, the advisor pulled out her exam paper.
"Very good," the advisor said. "Your progress has exceeded expectations. Do you have any plans for what you want to do after graduation?"
Zheng Mengni lowered her head in thought, her eyes clear and bright, both radiant and determined. "I want to focus on doing what I truly want."
"No general direction?"
Zheng Mengni smiled playfully, "Can I keep it a secret for now?"
The advisor paused for a moment before smiling back at her. "Of course. But what I meant was, if your family hasn’t made any arrangements yet, would you be willing to continue your studies? Your grades are quite good; if you can maintain this level, you could receive a recommendation letter from Xi Lan."
Upon hearing this, a cheerful smile spread across Zheng Mengni's face, a soft yet lively expression.
"Thank you, teacher. I will continue to work hard and seriously consider your suggestion."
After their conversation ended, Zheng Mengni turned to leave the office, delicately holding her report card as she walked toward the classroom. Her pale yellow sweater accentuated her graceful figure, and her light steps carried a hint of joy.
Being first in her major and earning a good ranking through her own efforts felt truly rewarding.
As for how to navigate her future path, Zheng Mengni already had plans in mind. During the winter break, she intended to enter a company under the guise of learning, starting from the grassroots level. She wanted to prove to Zheng Yicheng that even without marrying into wealth or clinging to powerful elites, she could still help the company thrive.
As for the recommendation letter mentioned by her advisor, that was also a good option; sometimes having an extra path to take could be beneficial.
After school, an unexpected person approached Zheng Mengni.
She asked gently, "Is there something you need?"
Looking at Zheng Mengni's warm and gentle expression, Zhou Minshi found himself unable to voice the words he had been holding back. His throat tightened, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Zheng Mengni glanced at her delicate wristwatch and said, "If there’s nothing else, I’ll be on my way now; it’s getting late."
Zhou Minshi felt a deep inner turmoil. After hesitating for a moment, he whispered, "Do you plan to pursue your master's degree at Xi Lan after graduation?"
Zheng Mengni had no intention of sharing her life plans with anyone. She replied ambiguously, "I suppose so."
Zhou Minshi's expression darkened. In truth, even without that opportunity, he had other paths to take and could find different ways to climb higher. However, at the moment, obtaining a recommendation letter from Xi Lan was the quickest and most reliable route.
He was truly tired of living a life where he felt trampled upon. Zhou Minshi clenched his fist, unsure of how to express his thoughts. Finally, he said gently, "With your family background, you could easily find a better school."
Zheng Mengni let out a soft "ah," smiling as she said, "I think I understand what you mean. You want me to give my spot to you, right?"
Zhou Minshi's face shifted between shades of anger and embarrassment. "It's not about giving; it's about returning."
Having spent so much time with Zheng Mengni, Zhou Minshi understood her abilities better than anyone else. She was vain and liked to cheat, but he was also willing to protect her lies.
