Zheng Mengni looked puzzled. "What’s wrong? Is there something else?"
Guan Su Lin's expression was serious, his dark eyes calm and earnest, as deep as the abyss. "There is something I think you need to know."
Zheng Mengni paused her packing and asked what it was.
Guan Su Lin closed the door he had just opened and stood still, not moving forward. "I know this may bring you sorrow, but if I don’t tell you, you might remain in the dark for the rest of your life."
Zheng Mengni stared at his profile. "Go ahead, it’s fine."
"On your birthday, your sister... she relapsed and passed away."
Guan Su Lin's gaze dropped slightly, meeting her clear, water-like eyes. In truth, he felt it unnecessary to share such news; the deceased were gone, and there was no need to let her harbor resentment towards the living. But time was running short. Before the engagement, he needed to eliminate all obstacles.
Tan Yan was shrewd and adept at winning people's hearts; his bond with Zheng Mengni ran deeper than Guan Su Lin's. The main family was a formidable opponent, especially with Tan Yan's support from behind, which lowered his chances of success. If Zheng Mengni chose them again, the inheritance dispute could take a turn for the worse. To prevent her from switching sides at a critical moment and siding with Tan Yan, he had to shatter their relationship first.
"I was puzzled when I learned about this," Guan Su Lin continued. "What kind of poison is so potent that there’s no antidote? How could a frail girl fall victim to it?"
Zheng Mengni replied, "So you know the truth. I’m sorry; I shouldn’t have meddled in your family matters."
She spoke softly, "It’s okay. I’ve been investigating this too; I want to know how she got poisoned."
"When your sister was hospitalized, you were always by her side. Xiao Wei was very worried and came to the hospital every day looking for you."
"He came?" Zheng Mengni's expression stiffened. She had been completely unaware of this but could guess where it was headed.
The atmosphere suddenly became tense and oppressive, an eerie silence hanging in the air.
Guan Su Lin's gaze intensified, captivating yet unsettling. He seemed to be organizing his thoughts, contemplating how to delicately reveal the truth.
The truth, even if he guessed it, was undeniable and sent chills down his spine. Guan Su Lin fixed his gaze on Zheng Mengni Ying's face, wondering what there was to hesitate about, what could possibly remain unspoken.
Having chosen this path, they had never been on the right track from the very beginning; why bother trying to correct it now? It was far too late.
The people downstairs were summoned by him, and Guan Junjin was deliberately given the opportunity to get close to Guan Qingmo. He knew exactly what they were plotting.
In the afternoon, he had intentionally gone out, leaving Guan Qingmo by Zheng Mengni's side. He understood Guan Qingmo's intentions and decided to go along with it, waiting for these fools to capsize their own boat.
