The midterm exams had just concluded, and a parent-teacher meeting was about to be held.
Zheng Mengni, with red-rimmed eyes, lowered her head and said, "Yao Yao, I can't find my mom and dad. No one is here for the meeting."
Seeing her so sad and helpless made Ye Yao Yao's heart ache. "It's okay, Ni Ni. My uncle is also your uncle! My mom will attend for me, and your uncle can attend for you. How about we each have one?"
Zheng Mengni's tears fell like raindrops. "Can that really work?"
Ye Yao Yao gently rubbed Zheng Mengni's chubby little face, which felt as soft and tender as a peeled egg. She couldn't help but feel affectionate. "Of course! As long as you tell your uncle, he will definitely agree. After school, I'll take you to find him!"
"Thank you, Yao Yao," Zheng Mengni whispered through her sobs.
Ye Bingran was not at home, and Ye Yao Yao couldn't wait any longer. She ordered the driver to take her to find Ye Bingran; otherwise, she would throw a tantrum and cry.
She believed promises must be kept; she didn't want to let Ni Ni down.
Ye Bingran was at an underground casino handling business when he heard from his subordinates that Ye Yao Yao had come looking for him. His expression froze momentarily. He rarely showed anger unless he was truly upset, in which case he would remain silent.
He tossed aside what he was holding, washed his hands, and headed toward the door. He was contemplating how to teach Ye Yao Yao not to come to places like this when his gaze caught sight of the quiet little bunny standing behind her.
His anger instantly dissipated; after all, he needed to maintain some dignity in front of his little niece, or so he thought.
Ye Yao Yao rushed over and tugged at Ye Bingran's shirt. "Uncle, can you go to school for Ni Ni's parent-teacher meeting?"
Zheng Mengni peeked out from behind her, looking up with eager eyes that seemed to reveal her innermost thoughts.
Ye Bingran felt relieved and replaced his tense expression with a gentle smile. "It's a small matter." He paused before asking, "Is there anything else?"
Ye Yao Yao shook her head, and Zheng Mengni followed suit. She shyly added in a soft voice, "Thank you, Uncle."
Ye Bingran smiled slightly and tilted his head to look at her. "Next time, if you remember to call me 'Brother,' I'll agree to anything."
Zheng Mengni's cheeks flushed red; that sounded great! But… if she did that, wouldn’t it confuse their family hierarchy?
Ye Bingran arrived at the school punctually for the parent-teacher meeting. Although he often dropped the two children off at school, he had never made an appearance in front of the teachers or classmates. He dressed modestly, yet his exquisite features and noble demeanor were hard to conceal.
A group of children gathered around him, their big eyes filled with innocence and curiosity.
"Wow, Ni Ni's dad is so handsome!"
"Ni Ni, can you let your dad pick you up from school more often?"
"Hello, Uncle! I'm Ni Ni's good friend."
The children's innocent admiration made Zheng Mengni shyly lower her head. Her little uncle was indeed very charming, and though the attention felt a bit overwhelming, it also brought her a sense of joy that she cherished.
Zheng Mengni silently pulled her small stool closer to Ye Bingran, borrowing his presence to enhance her own stature, as if she were the one surrounded by stars.
Noticing the little girl's thoughts, Ye Bingran played his role as a father well, seriously reviewing Zheng Mengni's homework. The pages were filled with bright pink highlights; she noted everything the teacher said, completely covering some of the textbook content.
It was clear she was a good student.
Ye Bingran's gaze softened with appreciation as he slowly pulled out Zheng Mengni's test paper.
"Well, perhaps I spoke too soon," he thought. The level four questions seemed a bit much for her.
Furrowing his brow slightly, he focused on the red circles on the paper, contemplating whether he should hire a tutor for Zheng Mengni. After all, it would be a grave mistake to let her fall behind in her studies.
Zheng Mengni hesitated several times, wanting to snatch the test paper back. She had studied hard; if her results were unsatisfactory, it was simply because the material covered in class hadn’t been tested.
After the parent-teacher meeting concluded, Ye Bingran was pulled aside by the homeroom teacher for half an hour of discussion. He listened with one ear and let it pass through the other, smiling cheerfully. "Kids will be kids; they need to learn and play. There's no need to put too much pressure on them."
Zheng Mengni pouted pitifully, determined to study hard from now on and vowing never to let her little uncle get scolded again.
