"They are your friends, but I don't have a good impression of them." Ma Shan held my hand tightly. "For you, I can tolerate them, but I hope you won't listen to them and won't leave me."
"I won't leave you."
He embraced me, his voice trembling slightly. "I really love you. Please don't leave me."
"I won't leave you."
I lay on the bed, my hands clasped together. "Oh God, may tomorrow go as smoothly as today."
The next day, after Ma Shan left, I seized the moment while he was in the kitchen washing dishes to sneak out my phone and hide in the bathroom.
I felt anxious, fearing that my phone wouldn't turn on. Fortunately, it was of decent quality and powered on with just a press of the button. I quickly set it to silent mode.
The SIM card had been removed, so I couldn't make any calls. However, there were some apps like Blog that I could still use. As long as I linked my phone number, I could receive a verification code. But it required my phone number to receive the code.
I was sweating with anxiety, trying repeatedly but to no avail. My frustration grew as I attempted various methods, yet nothing worked.
Looking at my disheveled reflection in the mirror, I decided it was best to return to the bedroom. I wrapped myself tightly in the blanket, forcing myself to calm down.
Suddenly, an idea struck me. I had previously downloaded a game that allowed me to connect with online friends. Perhaps someone there could help me.
So I began updating the game. While I was waiting for the update to finish, the surveillance camera suddenly beeped.
Then, Ma Shan's deep voice came through from the other side, "Honey, what are you doing?" He had set up the monitor at the door so he could see what I was up to while he was at work.
"I just finished showering and I'm about to take a nap," I replied.
"Why does your voice sound off?"
My heart tightened as I realized that my voice had changed slightly due to my anxiety.
"I'm just feeling a bit unwell, so..."
"Do you want to go to the hospital?"
"No, it's fine. I just need to rest a little."
"Okay, take care of yourself."
After hanging up, I let out a sigh of relief. Thankfully, I reacted quickly; otherwise, he would have caught on.
After about ten minutes, the game finally finished updating. I successfully logged in and immediately started adding friends. I added one friend with the note "Polaris."
They quickly accepted my request. Eagerly, I typed out a message: "Help me, call the police." Then I attached my address.
But there was no response from them. Despair washed over me. Was it really going to end like this?
I was unwilling to give up and began adding new friends again. This time, I added a friend with the note "Wind." They quickly accepted my request.
Learning from my previous experience, I didn't directly explain my situation. Instead, I started to share my grievances—complaining about my family and how my husband hit me. The other person expressed sympathy and encouraged me to stay strong. I felt a bit disappointed but still thanked them for their kindness.
Next, I added another friend, this time a woman. I told her that I was a victim of domestic violence and wanted to report it, but I had no opportunity and hoped she could help me. She seemed surprised and said she would ask her boyfriend for my location. A glimmer of hope ignited within me. Could she be the person I was looking for?
However, after a long wait, there was still no response from her. Just when I was about to lose hope, she finally replied: "Sorry, my boyfriend called me; I have to go now. Are you okay?"
I felt as if I had fallen into an ice pit once again. It was another dead end. But I didn't give up; I continued adding friends. This time, I added someone with the note "Night." They also accepted my request quickly.
