At that moment, time seemed to freeze. I widened my eyes, filled with fear and despair. His gaze was cold and profound, as if it could penetrate my very soul. I knew I was standing on the edge of life and death, and the person before me might very well be the true culprit lurking in the shadows.
"I find it strange too, but the police haven't found any evidence. What can we do?" My voice trembled slightly as I tried to mask my inner terror.
Chen Duo looked at me meaningfully, a faint smile playing at the corners of his lips. "What if there are witnesses?"
After saying this, he turned and left.
I sat dazed on the hospital bed, replaying scenes from last night in my mind. If I became a witness, the killer's revenge would surely fall upon me. Just thinking about it terrified me. Pei Wen was right; I had to pretend to have amnesia. Only then could I protect myself.
As I lost myself in thought, my phone suddenly vibrated. I picked it up and saw a text message from an unknown number. My hands shook as I opened the message—it was a photo.
In the picture, I was inside Classroom Five, next to a fallen USB drive. My mind buzzed with shock, leaving me blank. This was a photo from the night of the incident. This meant that the killer knew I was at the scene.
Pei Wen noticed something was off with me and asked with concern, "Honey, what's wrong?" My lips trembled, unable to form words as I handed him my phone directly. He took it and looked at the screen.
Her expression suddenly became complicated. "What... What is going on?"
My mind was in chaos, and I didn't know what to do. I had actually been targeted by the murderer!
Pei Wen looked at the photo, his face serious. "Why were you in the classroom?"
I forced myself to calm down and recounted everything to him in detail. "That night, I went to the classroom to find some materials, and unexpectedly, I witnessed someone jump off."
"I don't know how the murderer knew I was there. What does he mean by sending me this photo?"
Pei Wen furrowed his brows tightly. "It seems you have been targeted by the murderer."
I could no longer suppress my inner fear and began to cry in Pei Wen's arms. He gently patted my back, comforting me softly, "It's okay, I'm here with you."
I held onto him and cried for a long time until my emotions began to settle down.
At that moment, my phone rang again. Trembling, I opened it to find another message from that unfamiliar number.
I clicked on the photo, and my pupils constricted sharply.
In the picture was my panicked expression along with the fallen USB drive.
Clearly, the murderer was reminding me that he had all the evidence.
On that stormy night, I witnessed Xu Manman's death.
Now, I suspected that the murderer had turned his attention toward me.
I told Pei Wen everything that had happened.
"I was really scared at that time. I was holding the USB drive and preparing to leave when I turned around and saw the murderer push Xu Manman off."
I nodded with red eyes. "I really didn't mean to witness it. I don't know why the murderer specifically chose that building."
Pei Wen's expression changed dramatically. "So, you are a witness?"
I nodded, my voice tinged with despair. "I thought that if I acted like I didn't know anything, the murderer wouldn't target me. But now it seems he has already noticed me."
Pei Wen's demeanor grew serious. "It appears this murderer is not simple."
Panic set in. "What should I do? What can I do now?"
Pei Wen's gaze darkened. "Don't call the police yet. Both of these items have your fingerprints on them. If you report it, you could very well become a scapegoat." My mind was in chaos, and I felt utterly lost.
