Pei Wen continued, "How about this? We'll investigate this matter quietly and first find out the motive behind the killer's actions against Xu Manman."
"You mentioned that the killer hadn't acted while you were in the classroom, right? Perhaps Xu Manman was just one of his targets."
I recalled the details of that night carefully. Indeed, I had witnessed Xu Manman being pushed down the stairs, and the killer had glanced back at me. Maybe he just wanted to confirm if anyone else was watching.
I grasped Pei Wen's hand. "What should I do?"
Pei Wen pondered for a moment. "Tomorrow, you should return to school. If the killer discovers you're still alive, he will definitely become suspicious. If you don't show up the next day, he might come looking for you."
"Additionally, you can investigate secretly. After all, you're a teacher; the students won't suspect you."
I hesitated. "But what if the killer really is Chen Duo? Wouldn't that put me in danger?"
"Don't worry; I'll arrange for someone to protect you in secret." With Pei Wen's reassurance, I felt much more at ease.
Early the next morning, I returned to school. Pei Wen was right; if I didn't show up, the killer would indeed become suspicious. I needed to uncover the truth and clear my name.
I pretended to act nonchalant on the surface while secretly investigating the truth behind the incident.
Rumors about Xu Manman circulated wildly in school. Some said she was killed out of love, while others claimed it was for money. Opinions varied widely, and no one could agree.
Then it struck me—Xu Manman loved to post photos in group chats when she was alive.
She wore designer brands every day, as if she had suddenly become wealthy overnight. Someone in the group once asked Xu Manman where all these things came from. Xu Manman mysteriously replied, "I have my special channels." Looking back now, her "special channels" were probably the luxury items bought for her by those boys.
I privately messaged the group admin to ask if she knew who Xu Manman had argued with before her death. The admin told me that Xu Manman had a big fight with Chen Duo. Suddenly, I remembered that the boy who bumped into me in the hallway was Chen Duo. Could it be that Chen Duo was the murderer?
As I was lost in thought, someone tapped me on the shoulder from behind. I jumped in surprise and turned around to find it was Chen Duo. He looked at me with a sullen expression, a cold smirk creeping onto his lips. Instinctively, I took a few steps back to maintain my distance from him.
At that moment, a boy suddenly ran over and accidentally bumped into me. Fortunately, Chen Duo was quick to react and pulled me back; otherwise, I would have fallen.
The boy, however, played the victim and pointed an accusing finger at Chen Duo, shouting, "Are you blind?" Chen Duo scoffed, "You bumped into a teacher; don’t you know how to apologize?" The boy laughed mockingly, "Teacher? A teacher this young?" As he spoke, a lewd grin appeared on his face.
I glared at him in disgust and said, "What are you looking at?" The boy stepped closer, attempting to reach out and touch my face. But Chen Duo was quick again; he grabbed the boy's arm and threw him to the ground.
The boy was caught off guard, lying on the ground and groaning in pain. I was so frightened that my face turned pale, momentarily forgetting how to react.
Chen Duo smiled at me and asked, "Teacher, are you okay?"
I snapped back to reality and quickly shook my head. "No... I'm fine."
Chen Duo's smile widened. "Teacher, if anyone bullies you again, just call for me. I'll take care of them for you."
I forced a smile, nodding in a perfunctory manner.
The boy's blood soon pooled around him as he lifted his head, glaring at me and Chen Duo with malice. His gaze startled me, and I instinctively took a few steps back.
He sneered coldly, "Chen Duo, if you dare to hurt me, I will make you pay."
