The two followed the guards to the front of the General's residence. Chen Moxuan, of course, did not have the qualifications to enter, so he patted Chen Feng on the shoulder to offer encouragement. Taking a deep breath, Chen Feng stepped forward alone through the grand entrance of the General's mansion.
Inside the residence, the atmosphere was tense. Chen Feng navigated through corridors guarded by stern sentinels, ultimately arriving at a spacious hall. In the center of the hall sat a general clad in black armor, who was none other than Di Sha Jiang Jun.
Di Sha Jiang Jun was a towering figure with a resolute face and eyes as deep as the night sky, seemingly capable of seeing into one's soul. His long hair flowed freely, adding an air of wildness to his presence. It was rumored that Di Sha Jiang Jun had reached the Dao Embryo Ninth Rank; upon seeing him today, Chen Feng felt an invisible pressure surrounding him that inspired awe.
"You are the new Martial Champion, Chen Feng?" Di Sha Jiang Jun's voice was deep and powerful, as if each word carried immense weight.
Chen Feng straightened his back and looked firmly at Di Sha Jiang Jun. "Yes, General."
Di Sha Jiang Jun smiled slightly, though there was a hint of sharpness hidden within that smile. "I am not interested in how you became a Martial Champion; I only hope you can utilize your knowledge and skills effectively. Therefore, I appoint you as Captain of the Eagle Wing Guard, responsible for gathering intelligence on enemy movements and responding to enemy assassinations."
Chen Feng was momentarily taken aback by this unexpected turn; he hadn't anticipated that Di Sha Jiang Jun would not only overlook his lack of experience but also entrust him with command over a unit. A surge of excitement welled up within him. The Eagle Wing Guard held significant importance within Di Sha Zhan Bu.
As the saying goes, "When an army moves, provisions must be prepared first," but once war breaks out, the Eagle Wing Guard would be at the forefront even before supplies were ready. He clenched his fists tightly, determination shining in his eyes. "Thank you for your trust, General. I will not fail in my mission!"
"Very well," Di Sha Jiang Jun nodded in approval. He suddenly added a cautionary note: "However, I must remind you that the previous Ren Xiaowei perished amidst chaos. Your strength is indeed beyond my expectations, but this position is not so easily held."
Chen Feng did not feel fear upon hearing this; his Ancestor was his source of confidence. Though this position was perilous, it was also his best opportunity to prove his abilities. He took a deep breath, determination radiating from his gaze as he looked directly at Di Sha Jiang Jun and stated firmly, "Rest assured, General; I, Chen Feng, am no coward."
Upon hearing this, a satisfied smile crept onto Di Sha Jiang Jun's lips.
He stood up and walked in front of Chen Feng, patting him on the shoulder. "Good, you have ambition! I believe you won't let me down. The Eagle Wing Guard is waiting for their new Captain!"
Chen Feng bowed to Di Sha Jiang Jun and then turned to leave. After bidding farewell to Di Sha Jiang Jun, Chen Feng joyfully stepped outside to find his Ancestor, Chen Moxuan.
His steps were light, and his face was beaming with uncontainable excitement. As soon as he stepped out, he couldn't wait to exclaim, "Ancestor! Ancestor! Guess what? I was just appointed as the Eagle Wing Captain!"
Di Sha Jiang Jun was still very amiable and, unlike those with dark intentions, had high hopes for him. He then recounted everything that had happened inside.
Upon hearing this, Chen Moxuan raised an eyebrow slightly. "Well, since Di Sha Jiang Jun didn't make things difficult for you, whoever wants to deal with you can only resort to underhanded tactics. Just be cautious and wait for the right moment to retaliate. Once you showcase your strength, no one will dare to come after you."
Chen Feng nodded repeatedly in delight. However, Chen Moxuan rarely focused on the Mortal Dynasty; after all, his lifespan was far too long, while the Mortal Dynasty typically lasted only a few hundred years before undergoing significant changes. Therefore, he wasn't quite sure what the Eagle Wing Guard was responsible for.
"Wind, why don't you explain the duties of the Eagle Wing Guard?"
After hearing this, Chen Feng immediately explained. "The Eagle Wing Guard is responsible for reconnaissance of enemy movements and will also serve as the Vanguard Army when necessary."
Chen Moxuan frowned slightly upon hearing this. "It seems this isn't a particularly good position. A Ren Xiaowei just died; clearly, the situation is quite intense."
"You mentioned that the Crown Prince thinks highly of you?"
Chen Feng nodded. "After I became a Martial Champion, His Highness specifically invited me to his birthday banquet. Many people know we have a good relationship."
Chen Moxuan couldn't help but shake his head; Chen Feng truly wasn't suited for court life. Although a Martial Champion being sent directly to the front lines—especially to one of the most dangerous armies—was indeed suspicious, it must be said that with Chen Feng's intellect in court politics, it might have actually harmed him. Coming here might have saved his life.
Chen Moxuan waved his hand and said, "Alright then, let's first see what your warriors are like."
With that, the two of them sought out the personal guard who had just guided them. Under the escort of the personal guard, Chen Moxuan and Chen Feng passed through other military encampments until they reached the station of the Eagle Wing Guard.
As they stepped through the gates of the encampment, the first sight that greeted them was a grand training ground.
The training ground was vast, capable of accommodating thousands of people practicing simultaneously. The towering walls surrounding it seemed to be part of the skyline, isolating this area from the outside world.
Inside the training ground, various training facilities were meticulously arranged—weapon racks, shooting ranges, and obstacle courses—all showcasing the extraordinary atmosphere of this military training site.
The bodyguards led them through the training ground, deeper into the camp. Along the way, Chen Feng noticed that the soldiers of the Eagle Wing Guard were busily engaged in their drills. Their movements were synchronized and powerful, clearly indicating that they were all well-trained warriors.
Chen Feng felt a surge of pride at the thought of soon becoming a member of this formidable unit. However, Chen Moxuan beside him sensed something amiss.
Upon entering through the main gate, he had seen someone rush in quickly, presumably to deliver news. Yet after wandering around for some time, they had not encountered a single person to greet them.
After dismissing their bodyguards, the two men made a complete circuit of the encampment, gathering information here and there, but still saw no one around. It was at this moment that Chen Feng began to feel uneasy.
"Why is there not even one person to welcome us? And where are the five Qian Ren Jiang? We’ve walked around and haven’t seen anyone—are they hiding from us?" he thought to himself.
"You finally caught on," Chen Moxuan shot him a glance.
The Eagle Wing Guard consisted of five thousand men, all possessing considerable strength; most were at least at the Acquired level between Five and Houtian Ten. However, during their earlier stroll, they had noticed something troubling.
The situation was far from optimistic; it could be said that the camp was filled with wounded soldiers. Although half of them appeared relatively intact, there was a complex emotion reflected in their eyes that hinted at deeper issues within the ranks.
