"Are you trying to get yourself killed? Is it so wrong for a brother to care about his sister? Unlike you, who only knows how to cause trouble." Chen Yi looked at him with a face full of disdain.
Xu Dong immediately fell silent. Chen Yi was someone who genuinely cared for others. Although he was immature, he could think things through, which was why he had a girlfriend. Xu Dong was just a straightforward guy who excelled academically but lacked social finesse.
This was truly hilarious! "You two, can you please calm down for a moment?" Lin Menghan laughed so hard that she nearly fell off the couch.
A few days later, Xu Nancheng's speech was completed, and it was time for the new school term to begin.
On the morning of the first day of school, Xu Nancheng and Lin Menghan had woken up early to prepare for their registration at eight o'clock. At that moment, they were sitting on the sofa chatting.
"Nancheng, how's your speech coming along?" Lin Menghan asked, genuinely concerned about his presentation. Although she had encouraged him to give the speech, she was also worried about him making a fool of himself on stage.
"Not too bad, I think. We've practiced it several times already, right?" Xu Nancheng replied. However, despite his words, he felt his heart racing at the thought of it all and couldn't calm down.
After registration, they would change seats in class—this was one of the first things Teacher Li would do at the start of the term. Then it would be time for Xu Nancheng to take the stage.
He lowered his head, blushing slightly. "Lin Menghan, I'm still a bit nervous. I want to hold your hand."
Although Lin Menghan said it was fine to hold hands, Xu Nancheng still felt shy. They hadn't really held hands much over the past few days; it had mostly been just their wrists.
When Lin Menghan heard this, her mind went blank. What was he thinking about at a time like this? School was starting soon, and he was still thinking about holding hands!
"Maybe I shouldn't let him hold my hand after all," she thought.
"Here," she said instead. "Nancheng, you can hold your own hand." She placed her hand beside him, allowing Xu Nancheng to take it himself instead of her offering.
Without any hesitation, Xu Nancheng grasped her soft little hand tightly. Even though this was already the fourth time he had held Lin Menghan's hand, he couldn't help but marvel inwardly: Oh, this feels so nice!
It was as if a warm energy spread throughout his body in an instant, bringing him immense comfort and peace. At that moment, his anxiety began to fade away as if all his worries were drifting far from him.
However, he didn't seem satisfied with just holding her hand; he continued to gently squeeze it, relishing in its delicacy and softness.
Lin Menghan felt flustered by his actions; her heart raced like a startled deer, and her cheeks flushed bright red.
"Your hand is really so soft and comfortable," Xu Nancheng couldn't help but exclaim, his tone even carrying a hint of playful affection.
Upon hearing this, Lin Menghan's face turned even redder; she felt so shy that she wished she could find a hole to hide in. "Nancheng, please stop saying that! It's so embarrassing!" she pouted.
In truth, if she didn't want to hold hands, she would have pulled her hand away long ago—there wouldn't have been any chance for Xu Nancheng to hold it at all.
Lin Menghan and Xu Nancheng quickly turned their heads, apologizing with eyes full of regret. He was afraid that she might pull her hand away in anger because of his words. Of course, he could have forced her to hold hands, but he felt that would be inappropriate, so he chose to comply with Lin Menghan's wishes.
Once he turned back to look at her, he found it hard to look away. Her face seemed to possess a magical allure, deeply captivating Xu Nancheng's gaze. He quietly stared at Lin Menghan, his eyes burning with intensity, as if he wanted to imprint her beauty deep within his heart.
He longed to hold her tightly, wishing he could merge her into his very being. This impulse wasn't unique to Xu Nancheng; many people feel similar urges when faced with someone they like.
Noticing Xu Nancheng's fervent gaze, Lin Menghan shyly lowered her head, yet her heart was filled with sweetness and joy. She occasionally glanced up to steal a look at Xu Nancheng, but each time their eyes met, her heart raced and her face flushed.
"Are you nervous about the new semester, Lin Menghan?" After a long pause, Xu Nancheng finally spoke up.
"Yes, I’m very nervous," she admitted, feeling anxious both about the new semester and the moment they were sharing.
"Me too. I feel like the teachers will be all over us as soon as classes start."
This must be an experience shared by every student. Someone might ask if even the top students feel this way—yes, they do.
"Nancheng, are you nervous too?" Lin Menghan asked with wide eyes, curious about his response.
He was unaware that Lin Menghan was also a top student; she just didn't consider herself as impressive as him. Thus, she felt there was still a gap between them—after all, quantity can lead to quality changes.
"Of course! Who isn't nervous at the start of a new semester?"
"You must be scared by that speech!" Lin Menghan teased. She didn’t believe that a student who frequently received praise from teachers could possibly be nervous.
"I really am! Do you want to hear my heartbeat?" Xu Nancheng said again, a mischievous smile on his face.
"You're so bad, Nancheng!" Lin Menghan exclaimed. Although she had said they could only hold hands, she immediately agreed without thinking. But then she realized that listening to his heartbeat would mean leaning against him!
Even though she wanted to do that too, she refused to give in! She lightly tapped Xu Nancheng on the shoulder with one hand while hastily pulling away with the other.
"Cough cough, that's enough now," a mature voice interrupted them—it was Xu Nancheng's mother.
"Good morning, Auntie!" Lin Menghan greeted nervously. She felt like she had been caught in an intimate moment and her heart raced as if it might leap out of her chest.
"Mom, is it that early?"
"It's not too early. I still have to take you both to school later." Lin Zhen took a day off to drop the two of them off.
She usually didn't go, since Xu Nancheng could manage on his own. But now that Lin Menghan was around, she felt uneasy and wanted to accompany them to school, not only for protection but also to lend a helping hand.
"Well, Auntie, I have things to do, so I'll head out first." She lowered her head and spoke timidly, then dashed away before Lin Zhen could respond, retreating to her room.
She truly had things to do, and yet she also had excuses. The genuine tasks involved organizing her belongings; the Xu family had provided her with plenty of teaching aids, and she had also purchased some materials online that needed sorting before she could take them over.
The pretense was that once she got to her room, it wasn't really about tidying up at all; it was more about finding a place to hide and casually picking up a few things.
Xu Nancheng and Lin Zhen noticed Lin Menghan's hasty exit, and their voices suddenly turned cold, filled with an ominous tension.
