Wei Yanwan stepped out of Changchun Palace, the sunlight shining on her face, yet it did nothing to warm the chill deep within her heart. She recalled the way Qianlong had looked at her moments ago. She had to be cautious; she could not repeat past mistakes.
"Sister Wei," a somewhat childish voice called from behind her. A few leaves twirled in the air.
Wei Yanwan turned to see Jin Zhong standing a short distance away, his head bowed respectfully. She nodded slightly, "How did it go?"
Jin Zhong stepped forward and lowered his voice, "I have arranged everything. The letter from Ling Yunche to Ru Yi has already been delivered to the Emperor." He paused before adding, "I also arranged for someone to prepare incense for him." A surge of indescribable emotions welled up within Jin Zhong. He was willing to do anything for her, even if it meant facing a mountain of blades or a sea of fire.
He knew that as long as he followed Wei Yanwan, he could reach the pinnacle of power and change their tragic fate.
Wei Yanwan nodded in satisfaction. "Well done." A cold smile crept onto her lips. "Ru Yi, this time, let’s see what you have to say."
A few days later, in Yangxin Hall, Emperor Qianlong was reviewing memorials while Wei Yanwan stood by his side with lowered eyes.
"Your Majesty," Wei Yanwan said softly, seemingly casually bringing up a topic, "the guard Ling has been frequently visiting Yikun Palace lately." She carefully observed Qianlong's expression and felt a surge of joy when she noticed his brow furrowed.
Qianlong set down his red brush and asked in a deep voice, "What does Ling Yunche go to Yikun Palace for?"
Wei Yanwan lowered her eyelids, lightly biting her lip, appearing hesitant to speak. "This servant... this servant does not dare to speak recklessly."
Seeing her like this only piqued Qianlong's curiosity further, and his tone softened slightly. "Speak freely; there is no need for hesitation."
At that moment, a young eunuch rushed in, kneeling down in a panic to report, "Your Majesty, something terrible has happened! This servant found a letter behind the rockery in the Imperial Garden; it seems to be written by Ling Yunche to Her Majesty the Empress!"
Wei Yanwan finally lifted her head, tears glistening in her eyes as she whispered, “I heard… I heard that the Imperial Guard and… the Empress…” She didn’t continue, only letting out soft sobs.
Qianlong's expression darkened instantly. He stood up abruptly and began pacing back and forth in the hall.
The Emperor’s face turned grim. “Bring it here!”
The young eunuch hurriedly presented the letter. Qianlong opened it, and his face turned ashen. In the letter, Ling Yunche expressed his love for Ru Yi. Ling Yunche and Ru Yi? How could this be! Ru Yi had always been virtuous and kind; how could she do such a thing?
Seeing Qianlong's reaction, Wei Yanwan felt a surge of delight in her heart. She added more fuel to the fire with a few more words, further igniting Qianlong's suspicion towards Ru Yi.
“Bold!” Qianlong shouted, slamming the letter to the ground. “The Empress dares to betray me and consort with a guard!”
Unable to contain his fury any longer, he immediately ordered, “Go to Yikun Palace and conduct a thorough search!”
Inside Yikun Palace, Ru Yi was chatting and laughing with the palace maids when she suddenly heard a commotion outside. Moments later, a group of guards burst in and began searching without explanation.
Ru Yi's heart sank as she sensed something was amiss. She sternly demanded, “What are you doing?”
The leading guard presented the Emperor’s decree and coldly replied, “Your Majesty, we apologize for the intrusion.”
Ru Yi took the decree and, after reading it, her face turned pale. She never expected that Qianlong would suspect her of having an affair with Ling Yunche.
After searching for a long time, they finally discovered a letter hidden in a secret corner. The letter was written in Ling Yunche’s handwriting, filled with ambiguous sentiments that revealed his affection for Ru Yi.
Upon seeing this letter, Ru Yi immediately realized she had fallen into a trap.
Looking at the letter, Qianlong's heart burned with anger. He pointed at Ru Yi and shouted, "What have you ever done that is not a betrayal to the Emperor!" Ru Yi knelt down, tears streaming down her face.
"Wronged?" Emperor Qianlong sneered, "There is both witness and evidence; do you still dare to argue?" He pointed towards the door and roared, "Bring Ling Yunche to me!"
Ling Yunche was brought in by the guards. "With both witness and evidence present, what else can you say in your defense?"
Ling Yunche opened his mouth, wanting to explain, but he didn't know where to start. He understood that no matter how he explained, Qianlong would never believe him.
"Cast the Empress into the Cold Palace!"
Ru Yi was dragged away by the guards. She turned back to glance at Ling Yunche, her eyes filled with despair.
Outside the Cold Palace, Wei Yanwan and Jin Zhong stood side by side, watching as Ru Yi was taken inside, a smug smile on their faces.
"Ru Yi, this is your fate!"
"Congratulations, Your Highness, your revenge has been fulfilled," Jin Zhong said with a bow.
Wei Yanwan smiled lightly, but a complex emotion flickered in her eyes. In this lifetime, she had finally trampled Ru Yi underfoot, yet in her heart, there was no joy as she had imagined.
