"Juan Juan, do you know where Sister Na is?" Lan Ruo Yi asked casually. Juan glanced up at her, finally understanding the intent behind the invitation to dinner.
Lan Ruo Yi's eyes were clear, as if she were just making small talk. "I have no idea. She just disappeared suddenly, right? Don't you have any inside information? Share it with me," Juan replied nonchalantly.
Once those words left her mouth, Lan Ruo Yi realized that she wouldn't be able to glean any information from Juan, who clearly wasn't inclined to share. "We don't know either, so we thought we’d ask you. Ever since Sister Na left, there hasn't been a word from her—not even on social media," Lan Ruo Yi said. Juan smiled slightly, but it went unnoticed by Lan Ruo Yi; Liu Ru Yan caught it, however.
"Wow, has Sister Na been kidnapped? Hahaha!" Liu Ru Yan said jokingly, not expecting that there might be some truth to her words. After all, this was a society governed by law—who would think kidnapping could happen? Juan's brow twitched slightly at the comment.
"No way! In this day and age, how could there still be kidnappings? Hahaha!"
As they finished their meal, Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi had managed to find out what they wanted to know and were feeling quite pleased. However, Liu Ru Yan was not as happy; the food had been too spicy for her.
"Ahh! So spicy!" Liu Ru Yan exclaimed, taking a sip of ice water to ease the heat. By the time she got home in the afternoon, her lips were still red.
"Xiao Yan, what happened to you?" Liu Yuchuan asked, looking at his niece's swollen lips with concern. As a grown man, he couldn't help but start questioning the nature of her work.
"Uncle! Ahhh! Stop with those inappropriate thoughts!" Liu Ru Yan knew her uncle too well; he could read her like a book.
"What am I thinking?" Liu Yuchuan replied innocently. How did this girl know what was on his mind?
"Hehe, it's just spicy!" Liu Ru Yan said quickly to prove that nothing else was going on.
Lan Ruo Yi chimed in to clarify the situation for Liu Yuchuan, who seemed convinced but recalled a similar incident from before when she hadn't eaten anything spicy.
When Mo Daowan entered the room, he was greeted by an unusual sight: Liu Ru Yan sat on the middle sofa with her head down as if she had done something wrong, while Lan Ruo Yi sat beside her with a frown directed at Liu Yuchuan.
Liu Yuchuan looked at Liu Ru Yan as if he hadn't seen her in ages and approached her with his arms crossed.
Hearing footsteps, everyone turned around. Liu Yuchuan was the first to see Mo Daowan and wondered if it was strange to see him here. He noticed Liu Ru Yan looking up at him and quickly covered her mouth.
Lan Ruo Yi didn't understand why her brother had come again and pretended not to notice him.
Liu Yuchuan seemed to have caught something: "Come here! You need to see this!" He reached out to grab Mo Daowan's arm, but Mo Daowan casually dodged him and walked over to sit beside Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi instead.
Mo Daowan sat down next to Liu Ru Yan and gently asked, "What's wrong?"
Liu Yuchuan looked at his own hands and then back at the person sitting next to his niece. Was something off here?
Upon hearing Mo Daowan's soft voice near her ear, Liu Ru Yan felt her face scrunch up in confusion as she turned to look at him when he chuckled lightly.
Mo Daowan could only see a pair of watery eyes and swollen, red lips, a sight that struck him hard, leaving him momentarily breathless. He quickly turned his head away, trying not to look at the scene before him. His throat moved slightly as he asked, "What happened to your mouth?"
Lan Ruo Yi, being the closest person to them, felt as if she had taken a thousand points of damage. I shouldn't be in the car; I should be under it. Did she not know her own brother? How could he be so gentle with anyone? Just looking gentle on the surface, but deep down, he was more malicious than anyone else.
No wonder Mo Daowan came here; it turns out he wasn't here to see her at all. How self-deluded she had been.
Liu Yuchuan sensed that the atmosphere in front of him was off. After all, he had been single for years, and the only person he had ever interacted with was Liu Ru Yan. He had raised her from infancy, after all.
"Isn't it funny? She can make her mouth look like that just from eating something spicy!" Liu Yuchuan laughed, but soon felt embarrassed when he realized he was the only one laughing. Lan Ruo Yi shot him a glance.
He watched as Mo Daowan stood up and hurriedly helped Liu Ru Yan pour some water and get ice cubes to reduce the swelling. It was clear from this comparison that Mo Daowan cared more than an actual uncle would.
Liu Ru Yan frowned at Liu Yuchuan, her eyes narrowing as if she wanted to start scolding him. Just then, Mo Daowan brought over the ice cubes and pressed them against her mouth, signaling with his eyes for Liu Ru Yan to apply it herself.
Liu Ru Yan took the ice cubes and pressed them against her mouth. For a brief moment, their hands touched before they pulled away, and Mo Daowan's fingers gently brushed against hers.
Oh, what a reserved man.
Lan Ruo Yi watched Mo Daowan's actions and felt a twinge of envy while thinking how reserved this man truly was. Then she saw him stand up and walk towards Liu Yuchuan.
