Although she wasn't particularly eager to answer the call, Lan Ruo Yi decided to pick it up upon seeing Liu Ru Yan's expression. For her sister, she would brave any danger.
"Hello, Uncle," Lan Ruo Yi said.
Hearing the girl's cool voice, Liu Yuchuan chuckled, his tongue pressing against the roof of his mouth. "Ha! I heard that. Is that girl not answering, so you had to?"
Lan Ruo Yi felt a wave of irritation wash over her; he knew exactly how to get under her skin.
"Uh, heh heh," Lan Ruo Yi forced a laugh.
"Alright then, there's nothing much going on. I'm hanging up," she said and promptly ended the call. She fiddled with her phone for a moment before Liu Da came in for a meeting.
Liu Ru Yan retrieved her phone and stared at the messages Liu Yuchuan continued to send, feeling speechless.
"Exploding Gold Coins Uncle: You're something!"
"I'm doing just fine, at least better than you. Which parent reacts to seeing a corpse by video calling their child to identify the face?"
Liu Ru Yan quickly closed the messaging app, deciding that out of sight meant out of mind.
Lan Ruo Yi recalled Liu Yuchuan's mocking laughter and turned to Liu Ru Yan seriously. "Next time, I really won't answer."
Liu Yuchuan was indeed quite bothersome; his voice had a teasing quality that felt almost flirtatious. Lan Ruo Yi sensed her ears were developing their own opinions.
"There won't be a next time," she added dismissively.
That response was more of a perfunctory promise; who knew how many times Liu Ru Yan would ask Lan Ruo Yi to take calls in the future?
The two tidied up and prepared to head back to the office. They had only come down for a breather, not expecting to witness such an intense scene between Tian Luo and Li Meng.
After hearing such shocking news about Sister Na, they put on solemn expressions at the door before finally stepping inside.
As they entered, they overheard whispers that abruptly ceased before starting up again. Even Dong Li, who usually kept quiet, had begun to speak.
"Hey, hey, hey! Did you all hear?"
The two exchanged glances; this classic opening made them feel like they should grab some snacks.
But they still shook their heads. "What?"
Bai Juan also came over, followed closely by Zhang Baofeng.
"Sister Na is looking for you!" Dong Li said, pausing to observe Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi's reactions.
The two were in a difficult position; they had to pretend they didn’t know anything, which was quite a challenge. This was a test of their acting skills.
"Huh? Really? Isn't that something?" Lan Ruo Yi thought it best to take the lead in the performance, while Liu Ru Yan simply widened her eyes in feigned surprise, careful not to make eye contact with Lan Ruo Yi.
"What do you mean you don’t know?" Dong Li began to act, noticing that the two genuinely seemed oblivious.
"Know what? Did you find her or not?" Lan Ruo Yi replied, sounding as if she truly had no idea.
"Oh dear, you don’t know? It was a terrible situation! I heard she was found dead!" Dong Li exclaimed, sounding just like the gossiping aunties at the village entrance, pausing for effect as she emphasized her words.
Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi had no idea Dong Li possessed such talent for drama; they could only play along: "Huh? Really? Is that true?"
Dong Li anticipated their reaction; she felt that while others might be skeptical, these two were too innocent and naive to catch on.
Though Bai Juan and Zhang Baofeng were already aware of the situation, they decided to watch the show unfold.
Zhang Baofeng feigned disbelief: "How do you know? Don’t just make things up; this is serious."
Bai Juan nodded in agreement: "Exactly! We can't just spread rumors."
Dong Li rolled her eyes: "You’ll find out soon enough whether it’s a rumor or not!" With that, she strutted away in her high heels.
The remaining four exchanged glances, about to sit down when several people entered through the door. Liu Ru Yan and Lan Ruo Yi recognized them immediately—familiar faces.
Tang Mu Xuan hadn’t expected to see them here; after all, these two were her benefactors. If it weren’t for their status, they wouldn’t have even noticed Zhang Na’s absence.
"Miss Lan, Miss Liu, nice to see you again! Is this your company?" Tang Mu Xuan approached them first with a friendly greeting.
Everyone watched this interaction with curiosity, even Bai Juan and Zhang Baofeng were intrigued. Lan Ruo Yi and Liu Ru Yan remained calm and nodded politely at Tang Mu Xuan.
"Are you here on business? We wouldn’t want to disturb you," they said as if to leave, but Tang Mu Xuan raised her hand to stop them: "Miss Lan, wait! Do you know Zhang Na?"
Lan Ruo Yi and Liu Ru Yan exchanged casual glances before smiling at Tang Mu Xuan: "I know someone named Zhang Na, but I’m not sure if it’s the same person you're talking about!"
Tang Mu Xuan understood immediately: "No problem! Let’s sit down and chat."
She felt a surge of excitement; perhaps this would lead to something significant. Just as she was about to find a place to sit down and talk with them, a deep male voice came from behind her.
"What are we chatting about? Officer, why not talk with me instead?"
