At three in the afternoon, in a high-end restaurant in the city center.
When Xiaomei walked into the restaurant, she had already mentally prepared herself, but upon seeing Mrs. Li, her heart couldn't help but race. Mrs. Li was dressed in an elegant Chanel suit, her exquisite makeup and well-maintained skin making her appear much younger than her actual age. She sat gracefully at the table, holding a cup of red tea, her movements poised and refined. Despite maintaining a smile on her face, there was a hint of coldness in her eyes.
A Bao stood nervously beside her. Upon seeing Xiaomei, he quickly stood up and pulled out a chair for her, trying to ease the tension. "Xiaomei, please sit."
"Hello, Auntie," Xiaomei managed to force a smile and politely nodded, though she was already on guard.
Mrs. Li set down her teacup and slowly scanned Xiaomei's face before her gaze settled on her attire. A flicker of disdain crossed her eyes but was quickly concealed.
"Xiaomei, A Bao often mentions you. I heard you’ve been unemployed recently?" As soon as Mrs. Li finished speaking, it felt as if the temperature in the air had dropped.
Xiaomei's heart sank, but she was prepared for this moment. Smiling, she replied, "Yes, there were layoffs at my company recently, but I’ve already started looking for new opportunities."
"Oh," Mrs. Li responded lightly, as if appraising an item of little value. "It’s not easy to find a job these days, especially in your industry where competition is fierce and many are unemployed."
Xiaomei recognized that Mrs. Li was intentionally poking at her sore spot, but she showed no sign of panic. "That’s true; however, challenges are also a form of growth. I believe I will find a better opportunity soon."
A Bao fidgeted nervously beside them, trying to interject to lighten the mood. "Mom, Xiaomei is actually very capable; she performed excellently at her previous company. This is just an unfortunate incident."
Mrs. Li's gaze suddenly shifted to A Bao, her tone cold. "A Bao, you’re too soft-hearted. You need to understand that finding a partner is not a game; being unemployed is not something to be taken lightly."
Xiaomei took a deep breath, knowing that what came next might be even harsher. Sure enough, Mrs. Li continued coldly, "I won’t beat around the bush any longer, Xiaomei. A Bao is our only son; I hope he can find someone who matches him in every way—socially and financially. Given your current situation... well, I don’t think you’re suitable for our family."
The air instantly froze, and the soft background music in the restaurant seemed to turn jarring.
Xiao Mei tightened her grip on the teacup, her knuckles turning slightly white, yet her face remained calm. She understood that Mrs. Li's words were not impulsive but rather a premeditated strike.
"Auntie, I understand your concerns," Xiao Mei took a deep breath, her tone still steady. "But I believe everyone experiences ups and downs in life; it's impossible to sail smoothly all the time. Although I am currently facing some difficulties, I am confident that I can stand back up quickly. Moreover, my relationship with A Bao is built on mutual support and understanding, rather than dependency."
"Support and understanding?" Mrs. Li's tone dripped with sarcasm. "Support and understanding won't put food on the table. A Bao is a promising young man; he needs a partner who can share the responsibilities of the future with him, not someone who struggles to manage their own life."
