After bidding farewell to that unpleasant lunch, Xiaomei found a quiet corner in a café, ordered a cup of coffee, and took out her laptop. She took a deep breath, deciding to put all her emotions aside and focus on what she could control—finding her next job.
Since being laid off by the Large Company, Xiaomei had applied to several well-known internet companies and received numerous interview invitations. However, as she delved deeper into a few of these companies, she discovered that many seemingly glamorous positions were marred by issues such as overtime culture and low pay under high pressure. She had been waiting for an opportunity that truly suited her.
Just then, a new email popped up in her inbox with the subject line: “***Interview Invitation from X Company***.”
“What’s this?” Xiaomei squinted at the screen, and after confirming it was legitimate, she opened the email.

The email began succinctly, without any flowery language: “Xiaomei, we greatly admire your technical skills and industry experience, and we sincerely invite you to join our company as a Senior Technical Architect.”
It went on to outline specific job details and salary information. Although the salary was slightly lower than what she had at the Large Company, compared to other companies she had interviewed with, the conditions here were undoubtedly more favorable: flexible working hours and a relaxed team atmosphere. More importantly, the company placed a high value on technology, and she would have the opportunity to lead the architectural design of a new project.
What surprised Xiaomei the most was that this company was actually a competitor of her former employer. She had heard many rumors about this company—they had consistently outperformed her previous company in certain areas. Now, this opportunity was presenting itself before her, as if fate was giving her a chance to do something extraordinary.
“How interesting…” Xiaomei chuckled softly, feeling a subtle thrill rising within her.
She placed her hands on the keyboard, ready to reply to the email. But suddenly she hesitated—while this company had a good reputation in the industry, it was in direct competition with her former employer. If she accepted this offer, she would inevitably face off against her old colleagues, including that supervisor who had caused her countless troubles—Peter Wang.
At this thought, memories of her unpleasant experiences at the Large Company flooded back. Particularly vivid was the argument with Peter Wang that had ultimately led to her losing her job.
“Am I really ready to compete with them?” she asked herself.
After a moment of hesitation, Xiaomei recalled the disdain and contempt in A Bao's Mother's words, and suddenly a surge of determination ignited within her.
"What’s wrong with that? I have the ability, and I'm not afraid of them!" She encouraged herself in her heart.
After careful consideration, Xiaomei decided to arrange a meeting with the HR of the company for further understanding. She opened her computer and quickly sent a reply email expressing her willingness to discuss further. Then, she began to browse through the company's background information, past projects, and market evaluations about them.
Two days later, Xiaomei arrived punctually at the interview site of X Company. Unlike the slightly oppressive atmosphere of Large Company, X Company had a relatively relaxed and open environment. The receptionist greeted her with a smile and guided her into the conference room, making the entire process seem very efficient and human-centered.
