Book Synopsis
When the thick smoke woke me, my first instinct was to call my fiancé, the Fire Captain, hoping for help.
However, what I heard was not concern but a barrage of scolding: "Stop messing around. I'm just doing my job. Is it funny to joke about a fire?"
Amid the chaotic background noise, I caught the sound of another woman's sweet voice thanking him, and in despair, I hung up the phone.
The flames grew fiercer, trapping me in my apartment on the eighteenth floor. Surrounded by smoke and fire, I dialed 119, only to be told that the nearest fire station was occupied with other "emergency tasks." I could only watch as death approached.
In the end, faced with the choice between burning alive or jumping from the building, I chose the former and sent a final text: "I'm leaving. I wish you happiness. Please don't disturb or think of me."
I died, but my soul lingered in the air, witnessing what was deemed an "emergency task"—my fiancé gently comforting a girl having a depressive episode, a face I recognized all too well...
He smiled at her and said, "Don't be afraid. I'm here for you."
Ironically, this was once his promise to me.
