Book Synopsis
My grandmother had passed away when a woman, at least fifteen or sixteen years older than me, suddenly arrived. She first placed a stack of money on the table where the accounts were being recorded and bowed to the Elementary School Principal in charge of the bookkeeping. Only then did she kneel before my grandmother's Black Lacquered Coffin.
The onlookers exchanged silent glances; some rolled their eyes, others pursed their lips, and some lowered their heads to nudge each other, as if the person before them was not a beautiful girl but rather a fairy or an omen of misfortune.
The sound of the suona had died down, leaving the scene in complete silence. Even the guests who were supposed to chant "One bow, two bows, three bows, and another bow..." had forgotten to speak.
She remained there alone, bowing her head—once, twice, three times, four times—before rising and walking out.
At the moment she reached the door, she turned her head and exclaimed, "I’m in the South running Spirit Pavilion; some days I have enough to eat, other days I don’t. You don’t need to think about me; just pretend I was never saved back then!"
Her words froze my parents in their eager steps. My grandfather sat in the courtyard, yet she didn’t even cast him a glance.
The sisters from our family looked at my grandfather with concern; no one dared to speak or approach him. My brother chased after her but only spat at her back, muttering, "What a nuisance!"
